What Is Chiropractic Care and How Does It Work?
If you are looking for chiropractic care in Hamilton, MMD Chiropractic Health Centre offers precise, patient-centred treatment delivered by Dr. Marnie Mabee D'Andrea, serving patients across the Greater Hamilton area including Ancaster, Dundas, Stoney Creek, Waterdown, and Burlington.
Chiropractic Treatment
The treatment a chiropractor uses is termed joint manipulation or "adjustment." This treatment involves a very quick, precise, and safe amount of pressure applied to the specific joint levels in your spine that are causing your symptoms. As this pressure is applied, the joints are momentarily separated within the anatomical limits of the joint. At this point, we may hear a "pop," which is simply the conversion of chemicals in a liquid state changing to a gas. Just as if you were opening a bottle of champagne!
Not only do chiropractors treat disorders of the spine, but we also treat various injuries to the extremities. Depending on the chiropractor and his or her specialties, other techniques besides chiropractic care may be used to treat sports-related injuries, work-related injuries, motor vehicle-related injuries, maternity care, including prenatal chiropractic care, pediatric care, and geriatric care.
At MMD Chiropractic Health Centre, a variety of techniques will be used to precisely diagnose, treat, and offer options for comfort for your specific chiropractic care in Hamilton.
Back Pain Treatment
Eight out of ten Canadians will experience back pain at some point in their life. This pain may keep them from participating in everyday life, work, and school. As with any disease process or injury, early treatment will aid recovery and help return to those activities.
Our Hamilton chiropractic team understands how to relieve this pain. Often, chiropractic patients will have immediate relief. Reaching out early is always the best step toward a faster, more complete recovery.
Other Conditions We Treat
- Lateral epicondylitis
- Scoliosis

FAQs for Hamilton Chiropractic Care
Have questions about what to expect from chiropractic care in Hamilton at MMD Chiropractic Health Centre? Find answers to your most common questions below. You'll learn about our services, what to expect during your treatment, and the steps to begin your care.
What conditions does a chiropractor treat?
Chiropractors treat a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including back pain, neck pain, sports injuries, work-related injuries, and more. At our Hamilton chiropractic clinic, Dr. Mabee D'Andrea also has specialized training in Functional Movement Screening (FMS) and SFMA, enabling more precise diagnosis and an individualized treatment plan.
Does a chiropractic adjustment hurt?
Typically, a chiropractic adjustment does not hurt. What can hurt is the stretching of the tight muscles in order to position the patient to receive the adjustment. In addition, when there is a disc injury, some motions may cause the nerve to be irritated further. The chiropractor will position the patient in a way that is comfortable and avoid the pain provoking positions.
How many visits will I usually need before I feel better?
This is a difficult question to answer because it can be very individualized. However, in my 23 years of practice, the majority of “low back acute pain” resolves in 4-6 visits, plus or minus a few treatments. Keep in mind, this is for “feeling better”, not necessarily making long lasting movement corrections. Often lack of mobility in other joints can be the cause of pain. Mobility corrections rely on exercise and stretching for long lasting effects.
Do I need a referral from my doctor to see a chiropractor?
Chiropractors do not need a referral from a family doctor to see a patient. However, there are some insurance companies that require a medical referral for the insurance to cover treatment. Always check your insurance specifications so there are no surprises when you submit a bill.
Is chiropractic care covered by insurance, and do you direct bill?
Many extended health benefit plans in Ontario include coverage for chiropractic treatment. We recommend checking with your insurance provider ahead of your first visit to confirm your coverage and any applicable limits. . We take payment upfront, but we can direct bill to your insurance on your behalf. Please ask if you have any questions.
What is Functional Movement Screening (FMS)?
Functional Movement Screening is a standardized assessment tool used to identify movement limitations and asymmetries that can lead to injury. As a Certified FMS and SFMA Provider, Dr. Mabee D'Andrea uses this screening as part of chiropractic care in Hamilton to develop more targeted and effective treatment plans for each patient.
