Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral for Chiropractic or Massage Therapy?
You do NOT need a referral to see either provider. However, your extended health benefit plan may require a physician referral so please refer to your health plan for their requirements. All plans are different. In our experience, there are only a few insurance plans that require a chiropractic referral, but there are many that require a referral for massage therapy.
How do I know if I need Chiropractic or Massage Therapy?
There is no wrong answer. A Chiropractor will be able to diagnose and treat many disorders and injuries affecting the muscular, nervous and skeletal systems. The massage therapist will mainly treat the muscular system but can do some joint mobilization. If the chiropractor feels that a patient will benefit from massage therapy alone, they will refer to massage. And the same goes the other way; if the massage therapist feels that the patient would benefit better from chiropractic care or they are unsure of the diagnosis, the chiropractor can assess and help determine if another treatment would be more suitable.
Should I go to the Emergency Room for my back pain?
Do you have a fever? Have you lost bowel or bladder control? Do you have an open wound or unexplained redness or discolouration over the area of injury? If you answered yes to any of the above, you should be seen at the emergency room of your local hospital. If you have had trauma, including a car accident, a fall or twist to a body part and heard a crack and see a deformity, there is a chance you have a fracture. This should also be seen at the ER. If you are unsure, please give us a call and we can help direct you or call your family doctor’s office.
Do I need an xray to be seen by a Chiropractor?
An xray is not a requirement to be seen by a chiropractor. If there is a history of trauma, you are over 65 with your first episode of severe back pain, or your back pain is unresolved following 4-6 weeks of care then we will consider xray or another form of imaging to help finalize a diagnosis.
Is treatment going to hurt?
This really depends on the diagnosis. Typically, the physical act of a chiropractic adjustment does not hurt. However, getting you in position when you are in extreme pain can often be difficult and painful. When we do soft tissue therapy, either with massage or myofascial release, this will be the component that causes a “bruising” feeling post treatment. When there is injured tissue, there is a chance of post care pain, following both assessment and treatment. Keep in mind, a chiropractic adjustment is moving a joint that has not been moving for some time, so there may be discomfort until your body is used to the gained motion.
